Building a Web Site With iWeb

16 Mar

It was time to do it – my home domain had got into a real mess – so time to rebuild. I am not a programmer, and the site is nothing more than some fun – and a place to put stuff and amalgamate all of the various threads of my online world – so simplicity was the order of the day.

I am also a big fan of Apple – so I thought – why not ?

iWeb – here I come.

I am just about there – and for those that are interested – some 60 or so pages of WIP can be found here.

Here’s the thing though – I went into this knowing that it was never going to be as good as building a site with a real CMS – think Drupal or Joomia – and I didn’t want to do go up the learning curve for something like Dreamweaver – or even Contribute, that I have used in the past – so on the face of it iWeb is just right … no ?

Well – it depends.

Going through the process I documented a few really big annoyances that I think would make iWeb a lot better. If you have something to throw in the fray – please add your comments, including if you know any good workarounds. If this turns into anything substantial – I might just pop down to Cupertino to see if I can get an audience – any votes on my chances, or if they’ll listen ?

Ok – so here goes.

Sub Menus

There is just no easy way to do add a sub menu – so once you get beyond 6 or 7 pages – either your menu starts to wrap around the top – or you have to add in manual links to the extra pages.

Create Once – Use Many

No way to create a piece of content and reuse it many times. Say on a hidden page you could create some copy that through some kind of include – or pointer allows that copy to appear in many different places on the site … kind of like this in a ‘real’ site :

Header and Footers

Footers and Headers should be able to be set and appear same way on every page as default – with option to change page by page – section by section.

SEO

SEO – there really is no allowance for it at all. Now I am not going to get all fussed and fluffed around this – but how hard would it be to include routines to – there is simply no way to readily accommodate good SEO practice – is there ?

Page Naming

Any page has a single name – so what i call it in the iweb navigation is what it is called in the visible navigation – is what it reads in the browser when the site is visited – why not allow the builder to create page names for easier navigation in iweb – have a user friendly name for inclusion in navigation – and a fuller more descriptive name that appears in the browser ?
All of this could be done with page properties

Page Properties

And while we are on that topic – why not also – for each page have the ability to add meta tags for description, keywords and robots ? These could be set up as a default site entry – and then overwritten by the site builder as needed – or not at all.

iWeb Navigation

wouldn’t it be good to have the possibility to folder pages in the iweb nav – much as the photos pages work – but all pages – and while we are at it – did you know that if you wanted to publish (say) ../me/index.htm into two different sub directories on your main site – you can’t. Why ? Because you can’t have two sites in iweb both called me !

Finally – if anyone out there says I am wrong – and I just don’t know what I am doing – please let me know – and point me at the resource that gets around these challenges.

I Have Issues With Time …

31 Oct

Time … what do they know ….

Just read this article – and was struck by this comment :

“Market-research firm NPD Group dug into the numbers and determined that, on average, you’ll spend up to $800 more on an Apple than you would on a comparable PC laptop.”

On what basis are they comparing?

Built into Apple you find iLife – so no cost for a video editing suite, photo manager or web publising – built in microphone and video camera –

mail/calendar and address book cancels the need for outlook / entourage

oh and for the full office replscement – try iwork – at a fraction of the cost of office

… and i am sure that there are a tonne more comparisions …. anyone have a clue as to how such verdicts are arrived at ?

An Open Letter To All The Bento Folks At Filemaker

14 Oct

Dear Bento

What a pity that you aren’t offering a reduced upgrade price to all of us out there that have been using and promoting Bento on your behalf – sending you enhancement requests – helping you debug and generally putting up with not a very good V1 product (good direction – bad execution).
Now – as it begins to take shape – thanks to how many of us (do you know ?) …. we find that version 2 costs the same for V1 owners as if you had just turned up today.
What an excellent thank-you to all the people who have supported you.
Truly – now – think about it – what a great LOST OPPORTUNITY.

Customer Centricity

17 Jul

So – this just into my inbox. I know that lots of people have been complaining. I hadn’t – but I guess I am not as dependant on Mac as some people … still – premptive strike, customer centric, good offer …. thankyou Apple.

We have recently completed the transition from .Mac to MobileMe. Unfortunately, it was a lot rockier than we had hoped.

Although core services such as Mail, iDisk, Sync, Back to My Mac, and Gallery went relatively smoothly, the new MobileMe web applications had lots of problems initially. Fortunately we have worked through those problems and the web apps are now up and running.

Another snag we have run into is our use of the word “push” in describing everything under the MobileMe umbrella. While all email, contact or calendar changes on the iPhone and the web apps are immediately synced to and from the MobileMe “cloud,” changes made on a PC or Mac take up to 15 minutes to sync with the cloud and your other devices. So even though things are indeed instantly pushed to and from your iPhone and the web apps today, we are going to stop using the word “push” until it is near-instant on PCs and Macs, too.

We want to apologize to our loyal customers and express our appreciation for their patience by giving all current subscribers an automatic 30-day extension to their MobileMe subscription free of charge. Your extension will be reflected in your account settings within the next few weeks. [MY BOLD - Ed]

We hope you enjoy your new suite of web applications at me.com, in addition to keeping your iPhone and iPod touch wirelessly in sync with these new web applications and your Mac or PC.
Thank you,
The MobileMe Team

PDF goes ISO

14 Jul

It was around 1992/3, that we were building the first repository of online documents for the sales organisation in side a large software company. It was a skunk works – and there was a ‘competitor’ inside the ‘hallowed halls’. One of the big debates at the time was pdf versus some other kind of reader (sorry – the name eludes). The questions being asked ? Which standard will win ? Which do we go with ?

We elected to go with pdf – our ‘competitors’ went with the alternative. Our repository was adopted into the company’s core software. Our competitors moved on and founded a startup – which did very well.

Motto ? Not sure there is one ….
PDF Becomes ISO Standard

“The Portable Document Format (PDF), undeniably one of the most commonly used formats for electronic documents, is now accessible as an ISO International Standard – ISO 32000-1. This move follows a decision by Adobe Systems Incorporated, original developer and copyright owner of the format, to relinquish control to ISO, who is now in charge of publishing the specifications for the current version (1.7) and for updating and developing future versions.”

Daring Fireball: Firefox 3 vs. Safari 3

07 Apr

Firefox 3 vs. Safari 3 is a neat little piece in the support of Safari over Firefox. That aside – I particuarly like the quote from ‘the man’.

“Most people make the mistake of thinking design is what it looks like. People think it’s this veneer — that the designers are handed this box and told, ‘Make it look good!’ That’s not what we think design is. It’s not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works.”

So … Is Adobe slowly building an online empire ?

30 Mar

So, having just signed up for Adobe’s new web conferencing solution – Brio, not long after downloading TWHIRL – for my Twitter account – which is based on Adobe’s Air product and I have always been a fan of Buzzword – and don’t forget their online storage solution ….. I kind of tend to agree :

Adobe Is Slowly Building an Online Empire

“This got us thinking about Adobe’s other ventures into the web-enabled world, like Buzzword and Adobe Share. Although they currently function as separate applications, without too much effort, Adobe could tie them together and introduce an new and unique online suite worth noticing.”…. courtesy of Read Write Web

… and the design of these products are very clean and simple and elegant and … well you get the point.
